Li Dong occurs this year on November 7 and is known as ‘Standing Up of Winter’. It is the nineteenth of the 24 Solar Terms which divide the year into 24 ‘terms’ or seasonal markers. Based on the 360° passage of the Earth around the Sun, each term is 15 ° which translates into 15 days per term.

Li Dong is the first solar term of the winter season. In ancient times ‘Standing Up of Winter’ was an important festival when the Emperor followed by groups of officials would come to the suburb of the capital to offer a large sacrifice to heaven. Nowadays, people celebrate with Jiaozi (dumplings), winter swimming, and eating mutton, beef, and carrots.
